Rover Moot - September 2002

FRIDAY

After packing our gear into the minibus (how can 6 people need that much?!) we left St. Ives around sixish. Eventually made it to the campsite about nine o'clock, and straight away went to investigate the sea. It was wet, as expected, and the beach was sandy as expected, so we went back and started to put up the marquee. Personal tents went up, and then everyone went to the marquee for hotdogs and a quiz. I started to meet people, but it was a bit tricky to remember who was who because it was dark. We came second in the quiz. I'm sure if Hazel had been awake to contribute answers, we would have won.

SATURDAY

Flag break was at tenish. The weather was mizzley (is that a word?) but began to clear up after that. We went on a treasure hunt after that. It was on the dunes and the beach, and some of the clues were further away than expected. I think we were second or third back, but I still had some of the treasure - the wild blackberries. We went into Stalham to get some essential supplies (erm...chocolate). The afternoon was taken up with a raft building competition. It was fun, because the teams were muddled up, giving me a chance to meet people, and reducing any rivalry that might have been. All the rafts floated, although ours would only take two passengers. We took our canoes down to the beach to show off to the landies. But I spent more time capsizing and emptying my boat than anything else, to be honest. The raft race was fun to watch, as most teams just waded with their rafts, and ours was the only one that actually paddled the whole way. The evening was taken up with a Hawaiian celebration. The food was impressive, with sweet mashed potato and spit roasted pork. We played games on the beach after dark, including, of course, limbo and a coconut shy. We failed miserably in the cocktail competition, but I think ours tasted nice, and if we had only put more effort into presentation and not put it in a washing up bowl.... we might have won.

SUNDAY

Weather was more than mizzley today, so people began to pack up early, as others had further to go. After Scouts Own, we began to take down the marquee, and then pack our gear etc. By five o'clock, by the time we were ready to leave, the sun was shining. (Typical!)

I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, and can;t wait to make better friends with all the people I met there.
